In early 2013, I started using a software program called Droplr after a friend had recommend that I check it out. For me, Droplr was perfect because I could easily share files and screenshots with people I was trying to help. I also create a video tutorials to show other how to use Droplr over at Wealthy Affiliate and here on my blog.
Droplr became very popular among members of Wealthy Affiliate, because most members have their own websites and when they or others have questions or need help, sharing a quick screen capture with Droplr can often help can often be a great way to answer a question or explain a problem.
Droplr Discontinues Free User Accounts
However, in early January 2014 Droplr sent out an email notifying it’s current users that in order to continue to use Droplr you would need to purchase a monthly or yearly subscription. I can understand why they decided to charge users and I hold no grudge against them, it’s a business and it takes money to make money.
My Recommended Droplr Alternative – Monosnap
The software is called Monosnap and it’s currently 100% free, I say currently because with the recent changes over at Droplr.com I can see alternative software programs like Monosnap seeing a huge increase in users.
I created the video below back in January for my youtube channel but never got around to creating this post until now. The video will show you how Monosnap works and the different features available.
Monosnap is just like Droplr, after you download, install the software and run it, you’ll find the software icon appear in your notification tray area, right clicking will bring up the menu and a left click will display a floating icon just like a Drop Zone.
4 Reasons Why I Use Monosnap As An Alternative To Droplr
- Edit Captured Image: For me having the option to edit the captured image before uploading is perfect. I can now highlight areas of an image, re-crop, add text, blur out areas and much more. Previously I’d have to open up photoshop and make edits making the process very slow.
- It’s 100% FREE: When something is free that’s always a good reason. Droplr is now charging $4.99 & $9.99 per month, but don’t get me wrong, Droplr is still a great service.
- Upload To Your Own Server: You can configure monosnap so that it uploads image files directly to your own server or one of several other locations.
- View History Of Other Users Images You’ve Viewed: Over a Wealthy Affiliate, many people are now using Monosnap, so I’ll often check out images that other members have posted. If you have Monosnap running it will keep a history of other images you’ve viewed. Simply visit http://monosnap.com/history
Monosnap for MAC Users
If you’re a lucky MAC user then you’ll have a few extra benefits with Monosnap. It turns out that MAC users can record video too, this option is visible in the Windows version but it simply does nothing when you press the record button as you will see in my video above.
If you have any questions or comments about Monosnap please post them below. Or if you have an alternative software that you recommend for capturing images and sharing them online then let me know below.
