My Review Of Hostgator
This isn’t my first review of Hostgator and it’s probably not going to be my last either. I find it’s important to share an up to date review as things in the online world change so fast, so my opinion and the quality in a service may vary ever year.
I would like to say straight away that the hosting at Hostgator isn’t perfect, but all hosting companies have their ups and downs, not to mention you’ll always find good and bad reviews for all hosting companies.
I’ve been using Hostgator for almost 11 years but have also experienced and used other hosting companies, due to the fact that I help people with hosting related problems and people who want to switch hosts.
Baby Shared Plan: My baby shared plan I’ve had since the first day I joined Hostgator. I still have it today because I have a few websites that I haven’t moved yet, but it costs me under $10 a month and the websites pay for themselves, so for now I’ll keep the shared hosting plan.
VPS Hosting – Snappy 1000: I’ve had a VPS hosting plan for over a year now, I’m currently paying $50 per month and probably need to upgrade to the snappy 2000 plan soon. As you can see from the screenshot I’m starting to run out of space. This hosting is used mainly to host local clients websites and a few personal sites.
The VPS hosting is used mainly to host local clients websites and a few personal sites.
I do like having more control with the VPS hosting, but for anyone just starting out, or anyone who only plans on hosting their own sites, a shared hosting plan is perfect to get started.
Pros & Cons Using Hostgator Hosting
- Dirt cheap hosting packages available to meet your needs.
- Quick and easy software and script installation.
- Cpanel – Control panel access and features.
- Long waits to access live chat support. (this may have been fixed)
- Only once a week backups with shared plans.
- Possible overloaded shared servers.
Good hosting support is important, but keep in mind this isn’t web site creation or customization type support. Hostgator’s hosting support is for the hosting side only. For example, you install a script that happens to crash the server, well support is available and will help fix/restore the server.
But technically speaking, all servers are monitored, so if a server crashed support would probably already be looking into the problem. Granted sometimes support may not be aware of server problems and you may need to contact them to resolve the problem.
Live Chat Support: I’ve used Hostgator’s live chat several times over the years, it was very good back in the day, well at least it was in my experience, but support went downhill a little after being outsourced to India.
Plus you now always seem to have a 30 minute wait or longer to speak with someone via live chat. This is likely to discourage people from using the live chat and to search for help/answers. Please note, over the xmas holidays I’ve tried the live chat a few different time only to find a 1 to 2-minute wait. I’ll keep my eye on this and update as needed.
Available Hostgator Coupons
If you plan on purchasing a hosting plan with Hostgator, it’s recommended that you use a coupon code during the checkout to save some extra money. Below are my own Hostgator coupon codes that will save you money during the checkout.
Coupon Code: howtovideo = $9.94 OFF
Coupon Code: howtovideo25 = 25% OFF
How To Use Hostgator Hosting Coupons Wisely
I’d like to explain how to use the coupons code and which one is going to save you the most during the checkout. Plus what you don’t really need, but Hostgator will try make you purchase.
Firstly, Hostgator always has an offer of 20% OFF your order for most hosting plans, but 25% OFF or Save $9.94 is going to save you more money.
In the following example or this video, I’m going to be selecting a Baby shared hosting plan.
The first field during the checkout is “Please enter a domain”. I personally recommend you purchase a domain from Namecheap or Godaddy, but you can purchase a domain here too. Either way, enter the domain you already own or one you wish to purchase.
Billing Cycle: Your can select different billing cycles and scroll down to see the total checkout price.
Hosting Addons: By default Hostgator has two addons auto selected, this is going to add an extra $39.94 that you’ll be paying every year. If you plan on using wordpress, I have tutorials that will show you how to backup your site to dropbox for free. So I would uncheck and save yourself some money.
Coupon Code: Here you can enter one of the following coupon codes and then press validate. howtovideo or howtovideo25
These coupon codes only apply to the checkout order, so if you plan on paying monthly you’d be best using the code howtovideo to save $9.94. Please see the following screenshots:
Picking The Right Hostgator Hosting Plan
Hostgator offers a wide range of different hosting plans to meet your needs. Shared hosting that will cost you a few dollars per month up to a few hundred dollars per month.
Shared hosting is perfect if you’re about to build your first website or perhaps want to switch hosts and only have a few different sites. As you can see they have three plan, hatchling, baby and business. Just keep in mind that UNLIMITED isn’t really unlimited as they have limits on inodes.
If you’re looking for more control or even your own dedicated hosting server, then it’s going to cost you a lot more money than a shared hosting plan. As I mentioned above, I currently have a Baby shared plan plus a VPS Snappy 1000 plan that will need upgrading soon.
Remember that you can always contact Hostgator and have them upgrade or downgrade your hosting plan at anytime.
Transferring Websites To Hostgator
If you’re looking into switching hosts, you’ll need to transfer your current websites. Hostgator does offer a free transfer for one domain/site for most package that they offer. Keep in mind if your current hosting has cpanel you could create a complete cpanel backup and then have Hostgator install the backup on your new hosting.
Transfer a website from one hosting account to another can be tricky if you’ve never done anything like this before. If you need any help transferring a site or two, feel free to ask me for help if you get stuck. Plus if you join Hostgator using my coupon codes provide on this page, I’ll be more than willing to offer help.
As I’ve already mentioned above, no hosting company including Hostgator is going to be perfect. However, if you’re looking for cheap reliable hosting then Hostgator can provide you with everything you need, plus they offer a 45-day money back guarantee if you’re not happy with the service.
If you have any question about hosting or how to transfer a site over to Hostgator hosting, just post a comment below and I’ll gladly try help you out. And remember to use the Hostgator coupons during your checkout to save money.
