A big mistake that I believe everyone probably makes or made at some point is checking Google to see where their site ranks for a keyword phrase, but not signing out of a Google related account, like Gmail or Youtube for example.
You see, Google alters it’s search results that it returns to you by using data that it knows about you or data that’s stored in your browser. And now that Google Plus is here, many people are signed into a Gmail/Google account most of the time.
Now before I get into the details on how I personally go about checking my website ranking on Google. I want to just list of some of the known factors that will alter your search results when searching Google.
If you use Google Plus and you follow other people, when signed in and searching Google you’ll notice that some personalized results appear with the regular Web results. Now you can clearly see these the personalized results as they normally have a grey icon next to them. If you’d like to turn them off, you have an option on the top right side of the page.
Google also alters the search results when you’re not signed into any Google account. They do this by using data taken from your browser, for example your Google cookies and browser cache. They also know your approximate location because of the IP address used to access the internet.
How To Check Google Ranking – Video Tutorial
The Quick And Easy Way To Check Ranking
If you watched the video above you’ll already know what this is all about, but if you didn’t I want to share with you a free site that you can use to check your website ranking on Google.
The site is called WhatPageOfSearchAmIOn.com and as you can see from the image below, it’s very straight forward, you simply enter the URL and keyword phrase you’d like to check. You also have the option to change what domain version of Google to check, so you can also check Google.co.uk if you wanted too.
The software script then checks the first 10 pages to see if your site is ranking for the search phrase. If it finds your URL in the results, it will stop display a message telling you what page of search your on. Now as this is a public free tool you sometimes get messages saying something along the lines of “come back a little later and try again”. If they have too many requests, Google will put a temporary ban on them.
Although I do like this tool it doesn’t keep track of anything, sometimes it doesn’t work and more importantly I’m getting results based on the IP location the software/script is using when making queries.
How I Check & Track My Google Ranking
So the software I use daily (well almost daily) is called Accurank Tracker and you can check it out here: TheWiseAffiliate.com/Aranker It is a premium tool and costs just over $40, but that’s a one time fee with lifetime updates.
For the past few years I always used the Rank Tracker feature built into Market Samurai, but after they limited the keyword we could track and came out with a monthly fee if we want to track over 10 or so phrases I stopped using Market Samurai.
Accurank Tracker is different, it uses your own computer to make queries with Google to find the ranking of your keyword phrases. So there is no reason or need for monthly fees.
Why Do I Like Accurank Tracker?
I like it because it works and I can track an unlimited amount of keyword phrases from any URL that I choose, this allows me to track all of my content.
Videos are something that I enjoy doing too and most get posted to my Youtube Channel. I normally target a keyword phrase with each video and I like to track and see if the video thumbnail appears in Google’s web results and Accurank Tracker lets me track this .
A good example of how I use the software is this very post, once I publish this post, I’ll setup a new tracking campaign that will track the ranking of this post and the embedded youtube video for the keyword phrase “How To Check Google Ranking”, I’ll probably also track some similar phrases.
The reason I do this is so that I can then see where I’m ranked at all times, if I create some backlinks I want to know how much it’s help raise my ranking. It’s also good because should something ever go wrong and my ranking drops to page ten or something, I’ll know and I can then look into it and try fix the problem.
What Can I Track With Accurank Tracker?
You can track anything that has it’s own unique link or has it’s own domain, it just needs to get indexed and appear in Google or Bing web results to return data. I track selected blog posts and keyword phrases on this site and many other websites that I have, I track videos that I post on Youtube, articles submitted to directories, guest blog posts, training resources I publish over at Wealthy Affiliate and more.
What About My Location And Checking Rank?
The great thing about Accurank Tracker is you have the option to import and setup custom proxies, you can then tell the software to use a selected proxy to check a selected keyword phrase. This is great for people who do local SEO work for clients who are located in another country or area. With the right proxy you can now check ranking and get the results your client would see.
Export PDF – Search Ranking Details & Graph
If you’re involved in local SEO, something everyone want is the option to share reports with clients. Accurank Tracker has the option to export the details into a nicely organized PDF report. It can include your company logo if you wish and also a nice looking graph of how each
If you have any questions or comments please post them below or on the Youtube video page and I’ll reply ASAP, or if you use another method/tool and would like to share how to check Google ranking for your site, I welcome that too.
